Frequently Asked Questions About Personal Accident Insurance
Find answers to the most common questions
What does personal accident insurance cover?
Personal accident insurance is designed to compensate for an accident — a sudden, external and unforeseen event — that causes bodily injury. Israeli policies typically include a lump-sum payment for disability caused by an accident, a payment for death caused by an accident, a weekly benefit for loss of working capacity caused by an accident, and sometimes indemnity for medical expenses. The cover applies to accidents that happen in Israel and sometimes abroad, and does not cover illnesses, strokes, heart attacks or disability that does not result from an accident — all subject to the policy terms.
Does personal accident insurance replace health insurance?
No. Health insurance covers illnesses, surgeries, medications and hospitalization in most medical situations, including those not caused by an accident. Personal accident insurance is limited to accident events and mainly pays cash compensation rather than directly financing medical care. The two work together — personal accident provides an immediate financial safety net, while health insurance handles routine and complex medical needs. Many families hold both, plus Shaban or a group policy through work.
Do children need personal accident insurance?
The student personal accident insurance collected by the local authority typically provides broad cover — 24 hours a day, all year round and anywhere, including outside school — subject to the policy's terms and exclusions. Before adding a private personal accident policy for a child, it is worth mapping the existing student cover and any other family policies, identifying real gaps in sums insured or in covered scenarios, and considering an additional policy only if a higher benefit or a wider scope is genuinely needed. The decision depends on the family's situation, the child's lifestyle and existing coverage.
Does the policy cover accidents at home or at work?
Accidents at home are usually covered by a private personal accident policy. Work accidents for salaried employees are primarily covered by Bituach Leumi (the Work Injuries branch), so the private policy acts as a supplementary layer — covering gaps that Bituach Leumi does not pay and improving low disability assessments. Self-employed workers must register and pay independently for Work Injuries cover at Bituach Leumi, and often rely more heavily on a private policy. In every case, the definition of "accident" and the list of exclusions are governed by the policy wording.
When should I check whether the policy still fits?
Review cover after changes in work, sport or existing insurance. Multiple fixed-benefit policies may pay for the same event under their respective terms; expense reimbursement follows reimbursement and coordination rules. A listing in Har HaBituach is not a reason to cancel automatically. Compare the added benefit with cost and need.
How much does personal accident insurance cost?
The price depends on age, occupation, activities, benefit amounts and selected cover under the insurer’s terms. Compare the same benefits and exclusions, including how premiums change over the term.
Are sports covered?
There is no uniform cover for every sport. Competitive, professional or extreme activities may be excluded or need special terms. Describe the activity precisely and confirm its inclusion in writing before buying.
When might another policy be unnecessary?
When existing cover meets the need and the extra benefit does not justify its cost. Check exclusions and limits before deciding. Do not cancel a policy solely because another has a similar name.
